    EDGE BANDING MACHINES

    HOLEKS TECH offers edge banding machines for automated application of edge material to parts made of chipboard, MDF, plywood, and other panel-based materials. This equipment is used in cabinet furniture production, furniture front manufacturing, shopfitting, interior production, and other applications where a clean, finished edge is required.

    Depending on the machine configuration, an edge bander can perform a complete processing cycle in a single pass: edge preparation, glue application, edge feeding and pressing, end trimming, fine trimming, corner rounding, scraping, glue residue removal, and polishing. Automation of these operations increases productivity and helps maintain consistent processing quality in serial production.

    What an edge banding machine is used for

    After panel cutting, the exposed edge of the material remains unfinished. Edge banding covers this surface with a decorative strip, improves the appearance of the component, protects the panel core, and prepares the part for further assembly.

    Edge banding machines are used for:

    • applying edge material to straight components made of panel materials;
    • edging furniture components with PVC, ABS, melamine, and other materials depending on machine capabilities;
    • processing thin and thick edge bands within the machine’s permissible range;
    • trimming excess edge material in length and height;
    • fine trimming of the upper and lower edge;
    • corner rounding on machines equipped with the appropriate unit;
    • removing glue residues and polishing the finished component;
    • serial processing of furniture parts with repeatable settings.

    How an edge banding machine works

    The workpiece is placed on the feed system and automatically transported along the machine’s working units. The sequence of operations depends on the specific configuration, but the general process includes edge preparation, glue application, bonding of the edge material, and subsequent mechanical finishing.

    Powered feeding maintains a stable workpiece speed, while individual units perform their operations in sequence. This makes it possible to obtain a finished edge in a single pass without performing each operation manually.

    Pre-milling

    The pre-milling unit prepares the panel edge before glue application. It removes a small amount of material and eliminates minor irregularities or saw marks left after cutting.

    A flat and clean edge improves bonding stability and helps achieve a more uniform joint line between the panel and the edge band.

    Glue application

    After edge preparation, adhesive is applied to the panel edge. In conventional edge banding machines, this is usually done by a glue pot and application roller that transfers molten adhesive evenly onto the surface.

    Glue temperature and application amount should match the edge material and the technological requirements. Correct glue system adjustment directly affects bonding strength and the appearance of the finished edge.

    Edge material feeding

    The edge material is automatically fed from a roll into the gluing zone. After adhesive application, the edge is pressed against the panel by a system of pressure rollers.

    Depending on the machine design, different types and thicknesses of roll-fed edge material can be used. Some machines can also process edge strips of suitable thickness.

    Edge pressing

    After feeding, the edge material passes through the pressure unit. One or more rollers provide the required contact between the edge and the panel during bonding.

    Correct pressure adjustment helps ensure uniform contact over the full panel thickness and stable adhesion.

    End trimming

    After bonding, the edge material extends beyond the front and rear ends of the workpiece. The end trimming unit automatically cuts off this excess according to the panel length.

    Accurate trimming is important for producing clean ends without excessive overhang or damage to the workpiece.

    Fine trimming

    After gluing, the edge band may protrude above and below the panel surfaces. The trimming unit removes this excess and shapes the edge according to the panel thickness.

    Fine trimming creates a smooth transition between the panel surface and the edge material. Depending on the installed tooling, a straight or radiused profile can be produced.

    Corner rounding

    More advanced edge banding machines can be equipped with a corner rounding unit. It processes the front and rear corners after end trimming and profile trimming.

    This operation is especially important when using thicker radiused edge bands, where a smooth transition around the furniture component corner is required.

    Edge scraping

    After trimming, minor cutter marks may remain on the edge material. The edge scraping unit removes a very thin layer of material and smooths the profile surface.

    This improves finishing quality, especially with plastic edge materials where a smooth radius and absence of visible milling marks are important.

    Glue residue removal

    During edge banding, a small amount of adhesive may remain on the panel surface near the edge. Scraping or other finishing units can be used to clean the component.

    Removing glue residues helps achieve a cleaner final appearance and reduces the amount of manual finishing required after the part exits the machine.

    Polishing unit

    At the final stage, the component can pass through polishing wheels. They clean the edge and adjacent surfaces from minor residues and improve the appearance of the finished part.

    Polishing is especially useful in serial production where the component should leave the machine as ready as possible for subsequent operations or assembly.

    Panel thickness

    One of the main characteristics of an edge banding machine is the permissible panel thickness range. Minimum and maximum panel thickness determine which workpieces can be handled by the feed and pressure systems.

    When selecting equipment, this parameter should be matched to the panel thicknesses used in production.

    Edge band thickness

    Another key parameter is the permissible edge band thickness. Thin edge materials are used for standard edging, while thicker PVC or ABS bands can create a more pronounced decorative profile and radius.

    The machine must support the required edge thickness range because this affects the setup of the pressure, trimming, corner rounding, and other working units.

    Minimum workpiece dimensions

    In addition to panel thickness, the minimum workpiece length and width should also be considered. These parameters determine how small a component can be transported reliably through all machine units.

    For production environments with many small furniture parts, this can be one of the key selection criteria.

    Feed speed

    Feed speed indicates how quickly the workpiece moves through the machine and directly affects productivity.

    Moderate feed speed may be sufficient for smaller workshops, while serial furniture production requires higher productivity and stable operation under continuous workload.

    Workpiece transport and pressure system

    During processing, the panel must remain in a stable position relative to all working units. For this purpose, the machine uses a transport system and upper pressure beam to move the workpiece at a controlled speed.

    Correct pressure adjustment according to panel thickness is important for stable geometry and proper operation of trimming and cutting units.

    Control of working units

    Modern automatic edge banding machines can control key functions through an electronic control system and touchscreen interface. The operator sets the required parameters according to panel thickness, edge material, and processing requirements.

    Depending on the machine class, individual units can be positioned manually, by electric actuators, or by servo motors. Numerical control of selected units reduces changeover time and improves repeatability of machine settings.

    Automated changeover

    In production environments where panel thickness or edge material changes frequently, setup speed is especially important.

    Motorized or servo-controlled positioning of the pressure beam, guides, trimming units, and other components makes it possible to switch between different production tasks more quickly and reduces the amount of manual adjustment.

    Dust extraction and chip removal

    Pre-milling, end trimming, and profile trimming generate chips and dust. For this reason, working units are equipped with extraction ports that can be connected to a centralized or local dust extraction system.

    Efficient extraction helps keep the machine interior cleaner and supports stable operation of trimming and finishing units.

    Edge banding materials

    Depending on machine design and configuration, different edge materials can be used:

    • PVC;
    • ABS;
    • melamine edge banding;
    • veneer;
    • solid wood strips or other materials, if supported by the machine design.

    When selecting edge material, its thickness, stiffness, profile radius, adhesive system, and compatibility with the machine should be taken into account.

    Applications

    Edge banding machines are widely used in the production of products made from panel materials:

    • cabinet furniture production;
    • kitchen furniture manufacturing;
    • production of wardrobes, cabinets, and shelving;
    • office and shop furniture manufacturing;
    • furniture front and panel production;
    • interior component manufacturing;
    • joinery and furniture workshops;
    • serial industrial furniture production.

    How to choose an edge banding machine

    When selecting equipment, it is necessary to consider the type and dimensions of the workpieces, edge material, required productivity, and the list of operations that should be automated.

    The main selection parameters include:

    • minimum and maximum panel thickness — determine the permissible workpiece range;
    • minimum and maximum edge band thickness — determine compatibility with different edge materials;
    • minimum workpiece dimensions — particularly important when processing small furniture components;
    • feed speed — determines machine productivity;
    • pre-milling unit — prepares the panel edge before bonding;
    • end trimming and profile trimming units — determine the quality of mechanical edge finishing;
    • corner rounding unit — important when using thicker radiused edge bands;
    • scraping and polishing units — affect final finishing quality;
    • glue application system — selected according to the required bonding technology;
    • automation level — affects changeover speed and operating convenience in serial production.

    Machines for workshops and serial production

    Compact edge banding machines with a basic set of working units can be used in small furniture and joinery workshops. They automate the main edging operations and reduce the amount of manual finishing.

    For serial furniture production, more advanced automatic machines with pre-milling, multiple trimming and finishing units, higher feed speeds, and automated positioning of working units are more suitable.
