    COMBINED WOODWORKING MACHINES

    HOLEKS TECH offers combined woodworking machines that integrate several technological operations in a single unit. Depending on the machine design, the equipment can perform sawing, spindle moulding, surface planing, thickness planing, drilling, slotting, and other woodworking operations.

    Combined machines are particularly suitable for joinery workshops, furniture production, and small woodworking facilities where different types of machining are required but installing a separate machine for each operation would require significantly more floor space and additional investment.

    What is a combined woodworking machine

    A combined woodworking machine integrates two or more working units into one machine structure. Instead of using a separate saw, spindle moulder, surface planer, or thickness planer, the operator works on one machine and switches between technological operations by setting up the appropriate unit.

    Depending on its purpose, a combined machine may be designed around a specific group of operations or provide a broader range of woodworking functions.

    The main types of combined woodworking machines include:

    • combined saw and spindle moulder machines — integrate a sliding table saw unit and a spindle moulder;
    • universal combined woodworking machines — combine sawing, surface planing, thickness planing, spindle moulding, and drilling/mortising operations;
    • combined surface and thickness planers — combine two main solid wood preparation operations in one machine.

    Combined saw and spindle moulder machines

    Combined saw and spindle moulder machines integrate a sliding table saw unit and a spindle moulder in one structure. This allows the workpiece to be cut to the required size and then profiled, grooved, edge-machined, or processed by other spindle moulding operations.

    Each working unit typically has its own drive, allowing operating parameters to be selected according to the specific machining task.

    Sliding table saw unit

    The sawing section is used for rip, cross, and angled cutting of solid wood and panel-based materials. The workpiece moves on a sliding carriage, which provides stable guidance and makes it easier to process larger components.

    The main parameters of this unit include carriage length, main saw blade diameter, maximum cutting height, and rip cutting width.

    For processing laminated panels, the machine can also be equipped with a scoring unit to help achieve a cleaner edge with reduced chipping of the decorative surface.

    Spindle moulder unit

    The spindle moulder section is used for edge profiling, grooving, chamfering, radius machining, and other woodworking operations. The required cutting tool is mounted on a vertical spindle.

    Depending on the machine configuration, different spindle diameters, several spindle speeds, vertical spindle adjustment, spindle tilting, and other additional features may be available.

    Machines equipped with an appropriate carriage and guarding can also be used for tenoning operations.

    Universal combined woodworking machines

    Universal combined machines are designed to perform the widest range of basic woodworking operations at one workstation. A typical configuration may combine five functional units:

    • sawing unit — for rip, cross, and angled cutting;
    • surface planing unit — for creating a flat reference surface;
    • thickness planing unit — for calibrating the workpiece to the required thickness;
    • spindle moulder unit — for profiling, grooving, and edge machining;
    • drilling/mortising unit — for producing holes and slots.

    This combination makes it possible to perform a significant part of the machining cycle for solid wood components on one machine.

    Sawing on a universal combined machine

    The sawing unit is used to prepare the workpiece to the required length and width. Depending on the configuration, the machine may be equipped with a sliding carriage, main and scoring saw blades, rip fence, and cross-cut fence.

    Sawing capacity is determined by carriage length, saw blade diameter, maximum cutting height, and the distance between the blade and the parallel fence.

    Surface planing

    The surface planing unit is designed to create a flat reference face on a wooden workpiece. The component is moved along the working tables over the cutterblock, which gradually removes surface irregularities.

    The guide fence also allows an edge to be machined and the correct workpiece geometry to be established before subsequent operations.

    Thickness planing

    After creating a reference face, the workpiece can be calibrated to thickness using the thickness planing unit. Feed rollers move the workpiece through the machine while the cutterblock machines the opposite surface.

    This makes it possible to obtain a component with parallel faces and the required thickness.

    Spindle moulding

    The spindle moulder expands the capabilities of a universal machine and allows edge profiling, grooving, chamfering, radius machining, and decorative shaping.

    Spindle moulding capabilities depend on spindle diameter, vertical travel, available spindle speeds, and the maximum permissible tool size.

    Drilling and mortising

    The drilling/mortising unit is used to produce holes and elongated slots in wooden workpieces. It can be used for woodworking joints, hardware installation, and other technological operations.

    On some universal machines, this unit may be optional, allowing the machine configuration to be selected according to the requirements of the workshop.

    Combined surface and thickness planers

    A separate group of combined woodworking equipment consists of surface and thickness planers. These machines integrate two consecutive solid wood preparation operations — creating a flat reference face and calibrating the component to the required thickness.

    Such machines require less floor space than two separate machines and are particularly suitable for workshops and facilities where both surface planing and thickness planing are regularly required but two independent machines are not necessary.

    Surface planing mode

    In surface planing mode, the workpiece is moved manually along long tables over the cutterblock. The infeed table is set according to the required depth of cut, while the outfeed table supports the already machined section of the workpiece.

    Thickness planing mode

    When switching to thickness planing, the workpiece is fed through the lower working area by feed rollers. The position of the thicknessing table determines the final workpiece thickness.

    Depending on machine design, table adjustment can be manual or motorized, while the position can be monitored by a mechanical or electronic indicator.

    Changing between operations

    One of the main characteristics of combined machines is the need to reconfigure the equipment when switching from one operation to another.

    On simpler machines, part of the setup is performed manually. More advanced models may feature quick adjustment systems, powered positioning, electronic readouts, and other solutions that reduce changeover time.

    When selecting equipment, it is important to consider not only the number of available operations but also how frequently production will switch between them.

    Advantages of combined woodworking machines

    The main advantage of this type of equipment is the ability to perform several technological operations at a single workstation.

    • reduced floor space requirements — one machine can replace several separate machines;
    • lower initial investment compared with purchasing a full set of specialized machines;
    • versatility — different operations can be performed within one production area;
    • suitability for small batches and production with a varied range of components;
    • flexible configuration — the machine can be selected with the required working units and optional equipment;
    • compact workstation organization without the need to install several machines.

    When a combined machine is suitable

    Combined equipment is especially suitable for facilities where many different operations are required but none of them has a continuously high workload.

    Such machines are often used:

    • in small joinery workshops;
    • in furniture production;
    • for manufacturing doors, staircases, and interior components;
    • for producing solid wood products;
    • in repair and prototype workshops;
    • in facilities with limited production floor space;
    • for small-batch and custom production.

    Combined or separate specialized machines

    A combined machine is an appropriate choice when versatility and compact dimensions are important. It allows different operations to be performed on one machine, but switching between them may require setup and reconfiguration.

    In serial production with a continuously high workload for a specific operation, separate specialized machines can provide higher productivity. For example, independent surface planers and thickness planers make it possible to organize a sequential production process without reconfiguring one machine between operations.

    The choice between combined and specialized equipment therefore depends on production volume, component range, available floor space, and required productivity.

    How to choose a combined woodworking machine

    When selecting equipment, the first step is to determine which operations are actually required in production. There is little benefit in choosing the most multifunctional machine if only two of its working units will be used regularly.

    The main selection parameters include:

    • set of technological operations — sawing, surface planing, thickness planing, spindle moulding, drilling, or their combination;
    • working width of the surface and thickness planing units — determines the maximum workpiece width;
    • thickness planing height range — determines the permissible workpiece thickness;
    • sawing unit carriage length — important when processing large workpieces;
    • maximum cutting height — determines the maximum material thickness that can be sawn;
    • spindle diameter and spindle speed — determine compatibility with different spindle moulding tools;
    • motor power — should correspond to the working width, material, and operating intensity;
    • changeover time between operations — important where production tasks change frequently;
    • optional equipment — scoring unit, tenoning carriage, drilling/mortising unit, alternative cutterblocks, and other accessories.

    Cutterblocks for surface and thickness planing

    Combined machines with surface and thickness planing functions can be equipped with different cutterblock designs. Conventional systems use straight planer knives, while quick-change and spiral cutterblocks can simplify maintenance or provide different cutting characteristics.

    The suitable type depends on the wood species, required surface quality, operating intensity, and the specific production process.

    Optional equipment

    The capabilities of a combined machine depend not only on its basic design but also on the available optional equipment.

    Depending on the machine type, the following can be available:

    • scoring saw units;
    • cross-cut frames and extended sliding carriages;
    • tenoning tables and carriages;
    • spindle reverse;
    • different spindle diameters;
    • quick-change or spiral cutterblocks;
    • powered positioning of working units;
    • digital position indicators;
    • drilling/mortising attachments;
    • additional tables, stops, and clamping systems.

    Dust extraction and chip removal

    Since a combined machine can perform sawing, planing, and spindle moulding, a considerable amount of sawdust, chips, and wood dust is generated during operation.

    Appropriate extraction ports are provided for the individual working units and are connected to a local or centralized dust extraction system. Correctly selected extraction helps keep the working area clean and supports stable machine operation.
